Off the Grid will include NFTs but “never sell” them to players

Off the Grid, the upcoming sci-fi battle royale game from Gunzilla Games, will include NFTs via a new in-game trading platform called GunZ, but the developer assures players that it’ll never sell them directly.

Gunzilla Games has raised $46 million to build out its new in-game trading platform, GunZ. The platform will allow Off the Grid players to own and sell their in-game items via NFT technology, but Gunzilla “assures gamers that they will never sell NFTs directly to their player community.”

Off the Grid’s GunZ in-game trading platform aims to give players complete ownership of the items that they collect while playing, or purchase from other players. It’s designed to be the first game to allow players to purchase in-game items from other players via in-game trading, and it’ll be handled by an internal blockchain-based marketplace or “any” third-party marketplace that supports NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens).

According to Gunzilla, Off the Grid players will be able to take their items out of the game, and as the game grows, additional items will become available. Currently, such items include one-of-a-kind player-created characters, custom weapons, clothing, items, and accessories.

We can already see many of you reeling in disgust at the very mention of NFTs, and so far, a large portion of the gaming community has been extremely vocal about their disapproval of the technology. Back in February, Team17 announced a Worms NFT project but ended up cancelling it after 24 hours due to community and studio backlash. Some on the other hand, such as Mojang, have banned the technology completely, so it’s certainly surprising to see another developer attempt to sway the masses.

So how does Gunzilla hope to attract players to GunZ’s NFT-based trading? By not selling directly to players. According to a press release, “Gunzilla assures gamers that they will never sell NFTs directly to their player community, nor will they hide progression or any game features behind a monetized paywall, the trading is entirely optional.” The developer’s plan is to offer those that want to trade in-game items a way of doing it, while the players that have zero interest in using the technology can “completely skip this feature and simply enjoy the full game for free without any limitations.”

“We are striving to provide players with complete freedom in every detail of OTG (Off the Grid), and with each step of its gameplay. In OTG additionally to the core gameplay, players will be able to own and trade their in-game items with other players. As well as assure players that their hard-earned items remain theirs to keep, no matter what,” said Gunzilla Games’ CEO and co-founder Vlad Korolev. “In today’s free-to-play games, if you pay for something, it isn’t yours. You do not, and cannot, own anything. Anyone can read the EULA of any game to verify this. If you’re banned, for example, any item can be taken away from you, even if your ban is accidental. When you stop playing any free-to-play game, the money you’ve put in also disappears. We are re-inventing the system, putting the power back in the hands of gamers, and are using blockchain technology to make this happen. With OTG and GunZ, we are creating a universe that will set a new standard for the industry.”
